The Limitations of the 6-Minute Walk Test as a Measurement Tool in Chronic Heart Failure Patients.

چکیده
We thank Ganga and Jantz for their interest in our article. sessment of functional capacity in heart failure is complex; ailable tools are the 6-minute walk test (6MWT), functional ass, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing with gas exchange easurements, but each of them evaluates a specific aspect of nctional status and their interpretations are complementary. Any limitations of the interpretation of the 6MWT related to morbidities are likewise applicable to tests involving oxygen nsumption. A number of the clinical trials carried out to study heart failure ve used the 6MWT as the primary endpoint for evaluating the fectiveness of a given treatment and the beneficial effects on the mptoms. Likewise, in the study of pulmonary hypertension, mparable to heart failure because of its impact on quality of life, the WT is the only test approved for the assessment of functional class d is the primary endpoint in the assessment of exercise capacity. The evaluation of functional capacity using the New York Heart sociation (NYHA) functional classification is a subjective assessent from the perspective of the physician that does not correlate rfectly with other patient-centered outcomes, such as quality of e and the 6MWT. Like other authors, we did not include the HA class in the model because of the risk of its collinearity with e dependent variable, that is, the 6MWT distance. Efforts to investigate evaluation methods that provide more formation on functional aspects are undoubtedly necessary.

Assessment of exercise capacity in African patients with chronic heart failure using six minutes walk test
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to assess the functional capacity during a 6-minute corridor walk and a 6-minute bicycle ergometry exercise in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). METHOD Thirty five patients with stable CHF were recruited for the study. Each subject performed six minutes corridor walk and 6-minute bicycle ergometry testing. The 6-minute walk required the subjec...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the applicability of the incremental (shuttle) walk test in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and compare the performance of those patients on the shuttle walk test to that of the same patients on the encouraged 6-minute walk test. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted, in which 24 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were selecte...
متن کاملEffects of Pentoxifylline on Oxygenation and Exercise Tolerance in Patients with Severe Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Background: It was hypothesized that the use of Pentoxifylline would increase arterial O2 saturation and increase exercise tolerance in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Methods: We tested this hypothesis in 23 patients with COPD and pulmonary hypertension. Patients were randomized to receive Pentoxifylline or placebo, each for a 12-week period, in a prospectiv...
متن کاملThe Six-minute Walk Test (6MWT) for the Evaluation of Pulmonary Diseases
The six-minute walk test (6MWT) is a well-tolerated test which reflects daily activities and can be easily used in clinical practice. The 6MWT provides information about functional capacity, response to therapy and prognosis across a range of chronic cardiopulmonary conditions. Moreover, the 6MWT is sensitive to the common therapies used for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, such as pulmon...
متن کامل[Prognostic value of the Six-Minute Walk Test in heart failure].
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the true usefulness of the Six-Minute Walk Test as a prognostic indicator and its contribution to clinical practice with heart failure patients. METHODS In order to investigate the actual value of the Six-Minute Walk Test as an objective measure of mortality probability in patients with heart failure, the test was applied to 179 stable patients (120 men an...
